Though it wasn’t what anyone would call a complete performance, the Edmonton Oilers picked up two points in their first home game following the Olympic break on Tuesday, coming from behind to beat the Ottawa Senators 5-4 in overtime.
After both teams traded goals in the first, the visiting Sens seemed to take control with two goals in the second period. The Oilers capitalized on a delay-of-game penalty early in the third to cut Ottawa’s lead in half, then proceeded to dominate the final frame. Zach Hyman finally buried the tying goal with a minute and a half left on the clock, and Evan Bouchard scored the winner in overtime with Brady Tkachuk in the penalty box.
Leon Draisaitl led the way with two goals and three assists, recording the seventh five-point game of his career and his first since December of 2022 against Nashville. Evan Bouchard and Connor McDavid both picked up two points, and Zach Hyman’s game-tying goal was his 25th of the season.
Connor Ingram got the start for Edmonton and turned aside 17 of 21 shots for the win. After surrendering 18 shots on goal in the first two periods, the Oilers allowed only three shots to reach Ingram in the third period and overtime. Ottawa goaltender Linus Ullmark, meanwhile, allowed five goals on 37 shots in the loss.
It was a more chaotic win than the Oilers would like against a non-playoff opponent, but amid another stretch of defensive struggles, they’ll gladly take the result.
Edmonton now sits third in the Pacific Division with a 30-24-8 record. They’re two points back of the Golden Knights for top spot, one point back of the Ducks, and one point ahead of the Kraken, with both Anaheim and Seattle holding two games in hand.
With 20 games left on the schedule, the Oilers need to bank points however they can to avoid going into the playoffs as a wild-card team.

What they said…

Leon Draisaitl on what the Oilers did in the third period to rally against the Senators…
“I think we did a good job in the third of putting them on their heels and keeping it fairly simple. And then, we just needed two plays, so it ended up working out for us. But you have to be careful not to be in those situations too many times.
“You can’t keep chasing games going into the third. It’s not a recipe for success. So, at this time, you take any points you can get, and there are a lot of positives from tonight, but there are also still some things that we need to clean up.”
Zach Hyman on the feeling on Edmonton’s bench coming into the third period…
“We had desperation. You gotta win games, and we gotta keep the puck out of our net, obviously. But when we’re down, we have the firepower to be able to come back.
“We don’t want to be putting ourselves in that position as we have been of late, too often, but sometimes, you need a game like that where you come back, and it’s a complete team effort, and you’re able to dominate a third period and win a game. So I thought it was a good one for us and hopefully a spring toward better games.”
Evan Bouchard on the Oilers having confidence in their ability to come back after falling behind…
“We know we can come back against any team. It’s not what we want to do,  we want to be playing with the lead, but it’s good to know we can stay confident and that we have the guys that can get us back in it.”
“We can’t give away easy goals. Simple plays around the net. Stay hard around there and know if they want to score from the outside, give them that. But it’s more tightening up around the crease and around the net.”
“We knew that wasn’t good enough, four goals in 40 minutes. As I said, we stayed confident. We knew we could come back, and that’s what we did.”
Ottawa forward Dylan Cozens on the Senators blowing a third-period lead in Edmonton…
“I think we did play a pretty good game. They scored two power-play goals and a 6-on-5 goal, so we limited their chances at 5-on-5, and obviously we’ve got to be better on special teams. But we’d like to keep pushing a little more there in the third.”
Senators forward Michael Amadio on how Ottawa allowed the Oilers to get back into the game…
“I’m not sure we gave it away, but we did let up in the third, for sure. We didn’t stick to our game plan and that’s what caused us to fall apart there.”

Up next…

The Oilers will have a couple of days off before hosting the Eastern Conference-leading Carolina Hurricanes on Friday night. After that, Edmonton will hit the road for a four-game road trip, starting on Sunday against the Vegas Golden Knights.
