The Edmonton Oilers have recalled forward Quinn Hutson from the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors after a red-hot start to his rookie season.
Hutson, 23, who signed with the Oilers last spring, has appeared in 24 games this season, scoring 16 goals and 28 points, leading all AHL rookies in both marks. He also leads all AHL rookies in power play goals, with eight, while sitting third among rookies in shots on goal (69).
His numbers don’t just look good when compared to rookies, but among all AHL’ers, ranking third in the league in goals, and third in points.
Hutson signed a two-year, entry-level contract with the Oilers last April, burning the first year of the deal for him to make his NHL debut. He appeared in two games — one against the L.A. Kings, another against the San Jose Sharks — taking one shot on goal. The team signed him out of the NCAA’s Boston University, where he finished a three-year stint scoring 56 goals and 114 points in 117 games, including 23 goals and 50 points in 38 games in his final season.
He came in as an honourable mention in last summer’s Oilersnation prospect rankings, but the start to his rookie campaign will surely have him climb.
Secondary scoring has been an issue for the Oilers this season. Through 33 games, the Oilers have scored just 16 five-on-five goals when Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl are off the ice, a measly 1.26 goals per hour. Through 33 games last year, the Oilers had 24 goals without them, a still poor, but slightly better 1.85 goals per hour.
The Oilers kicked off their five-game road trip this weekend splitting a back-to-back against the Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens, beating the Leafs 6-3 in Tristan Jarry’s debut Saturday, before losing 4-1 to the Habs on Sunday night.
The trip continues Tuesday with a visit to Pittsburgh, where Stuart Skinner and Brett Kulak will likely make their Penguins debut, before they face the Boston Bruins Thursday and Minnesota Wild Saturday afternoon.
