The Edmonton Oilers have signed defenceman Spencer Stastney to a one-year, $1.525 million contract for the 2026-27 season, the club announced Sunday.
The deal, first reported by PuckPedia, will leave Stastney an unrestricted free agent at the end of the contract.
Stastney, 26, was acquired by the Oilers in a December trade with the Nashville Predators in exchange for a third-round pick in the 2027 draft. He appeared in 36 games this season for the Oilers, scoring one goal. With him on the ice at five-on-five, the Oilers controlled 47 per cent of the shot attmpet share, 46.9 per cent of the expected goal share and just 38.9 per cent of the actual goal share.
While that last number is lower than anyone would want, it was more due to the Oilers’ inability to score with him on the ice. Across his 512 minutes, the Oilers scored just 14 goals, a meagre 1.6 goals for per hour, while allowing just 2.6 goals against per hour, a solid clip. His impacts, according to HockeyViz, had Stastney driving play at the rate of a second-pairing defenceman, showing he can succeed in the sheltered role he had.
Stastney had success on the Oilers’ third pair playing with Ty Emberson, as at five-on-five, they outscored the opposition 8-5 for a 61.5 per cent goal share in 225 minutes, while also controlling 52.7 per cent of the expected goal share. Stastney didn’t play in any of the Oilers six playoff games against the Anaheim Ducks.
The Oilers also made Shakir Mukhamadullin’s signing official. He inked a two-year, $1.75 million deal, that will leave him a restricted free agent with arbitration rights at it’s conculsion.
The pair of deals has left the Oilers with $5.925 million in cap space with 22 active players on their roster. The team still has work to do, as restricted free agent Colton Dach is still without a contract ahead of next season. AFP Analytics projected him to sign a two-year deal carrying a $1.174 million cap hit.
