Never mind the water — there’s something in the Oilers’ new alternate jerseys

There’s an argument to be made that the Edmonton Oilers should never take off their new cream-coloured alternate jerseys.
They should wear them in the rink, wear them in the gym, and wear them at the grocery store.
Because never mind there being something in the water in Edmonton: there’s something in those jerseys.
The team has worn them three times so far this season, and the Oilers have three wins. They beat the Utah Mammoth 6-3 on Oct. 28th, the Seattle Kraken 9-4 on Thursday and the Winnipeg Jets 6-2 on Saturday night.
They’ve outscored the opposition a staggering 21-9 in those games in all situations, and 15-7 at five-on-five, controlling an impressive 68.2 percent of the goal share. Other team level statistics are impressive, too, as at five-on-five, they’ve controlled a staggering 62.5 percent of the high-danger scoring chance share, while shooting a staggering 20.8 percent.
The Oilers’ offence has ticked up in recent weeks, helped by the blowout wins over the Kraken and the Jets, and the confidence is growing for the team. That’s a dangerous proposition for the rest of the league.
Edmonton’s big guns have started to show up in these games. Connor McDavid has five goals and eight points in the cream jersey, while Leon Drasiaitl has three goals and eight points, and Evan Bouchard has seven assists and eight points. Other contributors, like Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Mattias Ekholm each have one goal and five points, Adam Henrique has four assists, and Matt Savoie has put up three goals — all of which came in the most-recent pair of games.
The goaltending numbers haven’t been great, partially due to score effects taking place and neither Calvin Pickard nor Stuart Skinner have faced much volume. Pickard, who started against the Kraken, allowed four goals against on 32 shots for a .875 save percentage, posting -.3 goals saved above expected, according to Natural Stat Trick, while Skinner has allowed four goals against on 44 shots for a .886 save percentage and an even zero goals saved above expected.
We can reasonably expect the Oilers’ shooting percentage in these jerseys to dip over time, as an all situation shooting percentage of 25 percent simply isn’t sustainable — but it’s fun to think about the Oilers staying hot in these jerseys.
The three games they’ve played in the jerseys were all scheduled, and the team is supposed to wear them four more times: at home twice on Dec. 23rd against the Calgary Flames and Jan. 31st against the Minnesota Wild, and on the road twice against the Chicago Blackhawks on Jan. 12th and the Nashville Predators on Jan. 13th.
But there might be an argument to be made for them rolling it out a few more times.
