The Day After 79.0: Oilers put wrench in San Jose’s playoff hopes, move closer to Pacific Division crown

The Oilers took care of business in San Jose on Wednesday, snapping a two-game losing streak with a 5-2 victory.
After Macklin Celebrini opened the scoring for the Sharks four minutes into the first period, Connor McDavid took over. Edmonton’s captain scored three times and added two assists, factoring in all five goals for the visitors.
McDavid now has 47 goals and 133 points on the season. He’s six points ahead of Nikita Kucherov in the Art Ross race and sits four goals back of Nathan MacKinnon in the Rocket Richard race.
Vasily Podkolzin, Jack Roslovic, and Evan Bouchard each chipped in two points in the win. Roslovic is now one goal shy of matching his career high of 22, while Podkolzin sits one away from reaching the 20-goal mark for the first time. Bouchard’s 91 points lead all defencemen and rank tenth in NHL scoring.
This was the kind of response the Oilers needed after letting points slip earlier in the week.
The win puts the Oilers two points clear of the Golden Knights and three ahead of the Ducks for top spot in the Pacific Division. Both teams have a game in hand to be played on Thursday. Anaheim will host San Jose, while Vegas visits Seattle.
For San Jose, the loss makes their playoff path more difficult. The Sharks sit three points back of Nashville for the final wild-card spot, with Los Angeles also ahead of them in the standings.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t all good news for Edmonton. Connor Ingram was pulled in favour of Tristan Jarry ahead of the third period because the starting goalie felt some discomfort. Forward Jason Dickinson also left the game after taking a shot to the foot.
What they said…
Oilers captain Connor McDavid on his five-point night leading Edmonton to a win in San Jose…
“It was a big two points. I thought everybody played really well, and personally, I got a couple of bounces early, which always helps. It was a fun game.”“I’ve grown to like back-to-backs this year. There’s something about them where I feel on right away, and tonight that was the case.”
Edmonton defenceman Evan Bouchard on feeding McDavid the puck when he’s rolling…
“Get him the puck. When you see him playing the way he was tonight and most of the season, you want to get it to him. He makes things happen that not many others can.”“We knew we had to bounce back from the last game. Back-to-backs aren’t always easy, especially against a team like San Jose that’s fighting for the playoffs. It’s a good win for us to sit on for a few days.”
Sharks forward Macklin Celebrini on trying to defend McDavid…
“He’s the best player in the league, and he’s the fastest. If you don’t slow him down or get in his way, he’s just going to skate by you. You’ve seen it his whole career.“I loved watching it when I was a fan, but it’s pretty frustrating when you’re playing against it.”
McDavid on facing Celebrini after playing together at the Olympic Winter Games…
“There are a lot of great players in this league, and he’s right up there at the very top. I prefer him on my left side at the Olympics than going against him.”
Edmonton head coach Kris Knoblauch on the goaltending change in the second intermission…
“We had him checked out in the training room and felt it was best not to push it and risk making it worse. That’s when we decided Jarry would go in.”“I thought our team defended really well. Jarry made a couple of saves when needed, and I liked how we responded.”
San Jose head coach Ryan Warsofsky on what went wrong in his team’s loss to the Oilers…
“This time of year, you’ve got to play simple, direct hockey, especially in the offensive zone. We haven’t been consistent enough with that.”
Up next…
The Oilers will finish their final road trip of the regular season on Saturday with a matinée game in Los Angeles. After that, Edmonton will return home to wrap up the schedule next week, hosting Colorado on Monday and Vancouver on Thursday.
