One of the biggest tournaments in the game is coming back to the provincial capital of Alberta.
On Tuesday, Hockey Canada announced that Edmonton and Red Deer, Alberta, will be the hosts for the 2027 IIHF World Junior Championship.
Dean McIntosh, senior vice-president of revenue, fan experience, and community impact of Hockey Canada, says the organization is excited to bring the tournament back to Alberta.
“We are excited,” McIntosh said in a release. “To give hockey fans in Alberta and across the country the opportunity to watch the top under-20 players compete for a gold medal right here in Canada. Both cities have been successful hosts of IIHF and other high-profile international events, and we know our partners in Edmonton and Red Deer will host a world-class event for players, teams, fans and volunteers alike.”
The tournament in 2027 will mark the 20th time Canada will host the World Juniors. It will be the fifth time Edmonton has been a host city as well. The hockey-crazed city first co-hosted the event with Red Deer and Calgary in 1995. Edmonton also co-hosted in 2012, with Canada winning bronze. The city was the primary host in 2021 and both tries at the World Juniors in 2022 during the COVID-19 pandemic. Canada won gold in 1995 and 2022, taking home the silver in 2021.
The Edmonton Oilers‘ home barn, Rogers Place, will most likely serve as the No. 1 rink for the 2027 World Juniors, with Canada’s group calling the arena home for the opening round. The Marchant Crane Centrium, home of the Western Hockey League’s Red Deer Rebels, will be the second arena.
Eight of Canada’s record 20 gold medals in the tournament have come on home ice. The nation has hosted the WJC about every other year since 2015. Team Canada last won gold in 2023 in Halifax, but unceremoniously bowed out in the quarterfinals, for the second year in a row, in Ottawa last January.
