Ken Holland’s legacy in hockey just got a new chapter.
After a lifetime in the game — from playing and scouting to managing and winning — Holland is joining the NHL’s Hockey Operations as a Consultant. Colin Campbell, NHL’s Senior VP of Hockey Ops, announced the move today via a press release, calling Holland’s insight “invaluable” and saying he brings a level of expertise that few in the game can match.
“We are delighted to welcome Ken to NHL Hockey Operations, where he will provide invaluable insight from his decades in the game as a player, scout and executive. He offers unmatched expertise in a wide range of areas,” Campbell said.
After wrapping up five seasons in Edmonton, where he helped steer the Oilers to the Stanley Cup Final last year — their first in nearly two decades — Holland is heading to the NHL’s headquarters as a consultant. Before Edmonton, he spent 22 years as the Red Wings GM, where he brought home three of Detroit’s four Cups in the modern era and ran one of the most successful teams in the league.
Over his 27-year GM career, Holland’s teams picked up 1,145 regular season wins, putting him fifth all-time for NHL GMs. But it wasn’t just about wins. His years on the NHL/NHLPA Competition Committee saw him push for changes that reshaped the game, including the introduction of 3-on-3 overtime. The expectation is that he’ll help the league take its next step forward.
Internationally, Holland was a part of multiple gold-medal campaigns for Canada, including the 2010 and 2014 Olympics and the 2016 World Cup. His hockey roots go back to the ’70s as a player, drafted by the Leafs and suiting up for a few NHL games and 343 in the AHL, before hanging up his skates. Now, with his track record and years of wisdom, Holland’s new role at the league will allow him to continue contributing to the game to which he’s dedicated his life.
