The Edmonton Oilers will be without Kailer Yamamoto for their three-game road trip through New Jersey and New York.

Yamamoto suffered an undisclosed injury while the Oilers were on their road trip through the southeastern United States a couple of weeks ago. He last suited up for the team in their 3-2 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning back on Nov. 8. He’s currently listed as day-to-day.

The Oilers called up Brad Malone from the Bakersfield Condors of the AHL ahead of their game against the Vegas Golden Knights on Saturday so, barring another roster move, they’ll have 13 forwards with them when they play the Devils, Islanders, and Rangers this week.

A player is eligible to be placed on the Long-Term Injured Reserve for salary cap relief if they’re expected to miss a minimum of 10 NHL games and 24 days in the NHL season. Yamamoto has been out for four games so far and won’t suit up for the three games on this trip.

Back in Game 2 of Edmonton’s Western Conference Final series with the Colorado Avalanche, Yamamoto took a hit up high from Gabriel Landeskog. He left the game and didn’t return to the series with what was called an “upper-body injury.” The undisclosed injury he’s dealing with this season could be related.

Yamamoto signed a two-year contract worth $3.1 million annually with the Oilers back in August following a 2021-22 campaign in which he scored a career-high 20 goals and 41 points in 81 games. Through 13 games this season, he has three assists.
