Three goals and nine points in three games have left Edmonton Oilers superstar Leon Draisaitl as the league’s first star of the week.
Draisaitl went on a tear, dominating against the Tampa Bay Lightning, Minnesota Wild, and Vegas Golden Knights. He kicked off the week Tuesday when Nikita Kucherov and co. rolled into town, where he became the first player this season to reach the 20-goal mark.
He scored the game-winning goal and an assist, helping lead the Oilers to a 2-1 win. Two nights later with the Oilers road-tripping to Minnesota, he led the way again with another massive performance. He doubled up on his Tampa point total, scoring a goal and four points — his 27th career four-point night — in a huge 7-1 win. Then, with the pesky Golden Knights in town for a Saturday matinee, he scored his league-leading seventh game-winning goal of the year, adding a pair of assists, in a 6-3 win.
Heading into Monday’s games, Draisaitl shares the NHL lead in goals, with 22, while coming fifth in points with 45 points. While in recent years he’s done much damage on the penalty kill, sometimes seeing his five-on-five production dip, that hasn’t been the case this season. He leads the league in five-on-five goals with 12, with his 21 points there are second in the league behind Brandon Hagel and Kirill Kaprizov, who each have 22.
Since the Oilers came out of their bye week, Draisaitl’s power play numbers have started to click, with two goals and seven points in eight games.
Nathan MacKinnon was named the second star of the week. He contributed on nine of the Avalanche’s 12 goals, notching four goals and five assists, and had a massive five-point performance in a 6-2 Avs win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Dec. 10. He also became the first player this season to score 50 points, racking up two goals and three points against the Nashville Predators Saturday night.
The third star of the week went to Ottawa Senators goaltender Linus Ullmark, who stopped 88 of the 91 shots he faced, getting wins in three Sens games. He posted a 0.99 goals-against average, and a .967 save percentage, adding a shutout in a win over the Carolina Hurricanes night.
