Pat Maroon just can’t stay away from the game of hockey.
After retiring from his NHL playing days after this past season, the USHL’s Muskegon Lumberjacks announced the three-time Stanley Cup Champion would be joining their coaching staff.
Maroon will work with the team as an assistant coach.
“We are excited to add Pat to our coaching staff,” said Lumberjacks president Steve Lowe. “As a program, we are always self-evaluating on how we get better. When this opportunity was presented to us, it was hard to turn down.
“Adding someone like Pat, who has three Stanley Cup rings, is something that doesn’t come along very often. Pat will be a great mentor for our players, coaching staff, and everyone at the Muskegon Lumberjacks.”
Maroon, meanwhile, said he was excited to help young players take the next step in their careers.
“I’m really looking forward to working with a winning organization and learning from the coaches, players, and management,” he said. “I’m also really excited to help the players develop and get 1% better to push them to the next level.”
Maroon, 37, earned himself the nickname “Big Rig” during his playing days, the most individually productive of which came during his time with the Edmonton Oilers during parts of the 2015-16 through 2017-18 seasons. He racked up 49 goals and 86 points in 154 games with Edmonton, spending much time with Connor McDavid on the Oilers’ top line.
The Oilers traded him to the New Jersey Devils in February 2018, and after spending the remainder of that season with the team, he signed with his hometown St. Louis Blues in 2018-19, helping them win the Stanley Cup. Maroon took his talents to Florida, signing with the Tampa Bay Lightning, helping win back-t0-back Stanley Cups.
Maroon was a guest on Oilersnation Everyday in May, reflecting on the 2017 playoffs with the Oilers, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and more.

Red Wings sign Hamonic

The Detroit Red Wings have bolstered their blueline for the upcoming season with a mid-August signing, inking defenceman Travis Hamonic to a one-year contract, the club announced Friday.
The 34-year-old right-shot has spent the last three and a half seasons with the Ottawa Senators, and is coming off a season where he drew in for 59 games, scoring a goal and 17 points with a -16 rating.
Hamonic will earn $1-million this season.
A stop in Detroit will mark the fifth NHL team he’s played on, having been drafted in the second round of the 2008 draft by the New York Islanders. He called Long Island home for the first seven years of his career between the 2010-11 and 2019-20 seasons, before he was acquired alongside a fourth-round pick by the Calgary Flames for a first-round pick and two second-round picks.
He remained there for three years before a season and a half long stint with the Vancouver Canucks, who ultimately traded him to Ottawa in March 2022.

Other news and notes…

  • Hamonic wasn’t the only defenceman to sign a contract Friday, as the Columbus Blue Jackets signed Daemon Hunt to a one-year contract. While the team didn’t reveal terms for their final restricted free agent, PuckPedia reported Friday it’s for $775,000. The 24-year-old was acquired by the Blue Jackets in a package including draft picks last November in a deal that saw them send defensive prospect David Jiricek to the Wild.
