Former Edmonton Oilers winger Jesse Puljujarvi has signed a two-year contract to continue his hockey career in Switzerland.
The Swiss National League’s Genève-Servette HC announced the signing on Tuesday morning.
Drafted by the Edmonton Oilers fourth overall in the 2016 draft, Puljujarvi was a polarizing figure in Alberta’s Capital over the six years and 387 regular season games he played here. Scoring 51 goals and 112 points, he was a consistently reliable player outside of the offensive zone, using his size, speed and smarts to break up the opposing teams play.
But Puljujarvi could never seem to put it together in the offensive zone, with his best offensive season coming in 2021-22, scoring 14 goals and 36 points in 65 games with the Oilers.
Edmonton would trade him to the Carolina Hurricanes in February 2023 for unsigned prospect Patrik Puistola, who never signed with the Oilers. He played 17 games in the remainder of that season scoring two assists, before spending time with the Pittsburgh Penguins and Florida Panthers.
He would wind up with the Panthers’ AHL affiliate Charlotte Checkers towards the end of the season, scoring five goals and 13 points in 22 games, before playing a big role in their run to the Calder Cup Final. In the AHL playoffs, he racked up three goals and 11 points.
His heading back to Europe will be the second time he’s done so in his career, having played the full 2019-20 season and part of the 2020-21 season with the Finnish Elite League’s Karpat, scoring 31 goals and 65 points in 72 games.

Other news and notes…

  • The NHL and NHLPA officially ratified the new four-year Collective Bargaining Agreement, set to take affect in the 2026-27 season. The new CBA carries some interesting changes, such as expanding the regular season to 84 games and shortening the pre-season to four games, while maximum term for players re-signing contracts is seven years, and those on the free agent market at six years.
  • The Colorado Avalanche hired Dave Hakstol as an assistant coach on Tuesday, joining head coach Jared Bednar’s staff. Hakstol brings with him a wealth of coaching experience spanning nearly 30 years, four of which were spent as head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers and another three as head coach of the Seattle Kraken.
