‘He’s believing in this team’: Oilers fans react to Jason Dickinson’s five-year contract

Edmonton Oilers fans received their first bit of big news this off-season as the organization announced they signed forward Jason Dickinson to a five-year contract worth $4 million per year.
There were rumblings that the centre would fetch around $5 million, which worried some. However, after the deal was announced, fans were pleasantly surprised by the contract and quickly expressed their opinions on social media. Others, however, noticed its faults as well.
Reactions are off of X, the Oilersnation comment section on Facebook, Instagram , and the Oilers subreddit on the Jason Dickinson deal
Ken Holland put Edmonton in a hole. Stan Bowman has dug it deeper and begun shopping for coffins and a tombstone since taking over. He has handed out some dogs**t contracts. – PuckEmpire via XProbably had to give the 5th year to get the AAV down. I like this signing for the Oil. It bolsters a bottom 6 that was -14 last year (5×5) while solidifying the PK. Now go get Murphy signed. – Klimas Lid via XBig fan of this for Edmonton. Weak UFA market and they’re able to keep a defensive 3C at a really good price who worked well with them after being acquired. Rising cap makes this deal great, even if he slows down in years 4-5. – The Mug NHL via XTerm is a bit long, but the AAV is absolutely solid though! Great signing let’s go DICKY!!! – Austin Hocky via XI actually love that contract considering what he brings to the table. SO happy to retain him! Now we just gotta resign Murphy! And Kapanen. – Dylan Desjardins via XI’m actually shocked Stan managed to make it happen, and that’s actually not a bad signing. 4 million with the cap going up is really valuable for a strong 3C, and 5 years is a good sweet spot for length. – Shima_HD via X5 yrs. He’s believing in this team. Him healthy proved his worth. Dont worry about ppl thinking he should get 2.5million🤦♂️ – zero clue about strengths on a team get fair $ Go look at Lowry on Jets contact… you tell me what you find out 😉 BEAUTY CONTRACT – Jesse the Drop via X
By all accounts, most Oilers are satisfied that the team was able to retain Jason Dickinson after trading for him near the 2026 NHL trade deadline. It’s hard to tell whether those who are critical of the signing are serious or just trying to rage-bait fans, because the overwhelming majority of fans have been positive about the contract numbers and the player himself.
Thank god it wasn’t 5×5 – Lucas Hernandez via FacebookHonestly maybe a year to long but so happy he’s staying put, now we just need Murphy. – Joe Murphy via FacebookAnother bad contract. Too long & at least a million too much. This is like a repeat of Janmark except for more money & term. Would’ve been better off trading for Trochek so there’d be more established depth scoring for the 3rd line which is still an area of weakness. Dickinson didn’t perform that great & got injured way too fast in the short time he was with us already. Once again s**tman in determination to prove he didn’t make a bad trade overpays & gives too much term. Really hope there’s no ntc/nmc clauses. – Fay Mah via FacebookI wish it was a 4 year deal, but this is good news. He didn’t break the bank doing it either. Good news that Dickinson remains an Oiler. – Tracijohal via InstagramFirst positive thing I’ve heard Oilers related in a while. – Dartsport94 via InstagramHoly s**t considering I was hearing $5-5.5 million this is a great contract, especially with the cap going up. – Spiritual-Gangster- via r/EdmontonOilersTidy piece of work. He’ll be 35 when the contract ends, and the AAV is completely livable. Good move by Bowman. – SadBuilding9234 via r/EdmontonOilersAt first, Mangiapane + a first round pick for a pending UFA seemed awful, but having retained him and the role he will fill on this team it feels better somehow, especially at that AAV. – maasd via r/EdmontonOilers
The Oilers’ first bit of business this off-season has a good chunk of the fan base happy. No deal is ever perfect, but in the eyes of a fan base that is hypercritical of every move this team makes, they find the Dickinson deal to be at a great price, a tidy piece of work from Stan Bowman and company.
