At 0:36 of the second period, Leon Draisaitl hit a milestone that only three players in Oilers franchise history have reached, scoring his 300th career power play point. On a vintage-looking Oilers’ PP, Connor McDavid drew three Islanders toward him in the slot, opening the lane to find Draisaitl in his sweet spot in the circle. If you were ever going to picture Leon picking up his 300th PP point, it’s only fitting that it happened there.
The goal also marked his 11th of the season and 19th point, highlighting his continued offensive dominance even though the rest of the team is taking time to catch up. Reaching the 300-point milestone on the power play solidifies Draisaitl’s place among the franchise’s greatest special teams players, an elite club where only two others — McDavid and Wayne Gretzky — currently reside. Talk about a trio, right?
The night wasn’t without its battles, though. The Oilers were halfway through the third period with a 3-1 lead, seemingly in control and cruising toward a second consecutive win. But as they’ve shown at times this season, no lead is guaranteed. Shift by shift and mistake by mistake, they allowed the Islanders to battle back and even the score at 3-3 with the goalie pulled, sending the game into overtime and putting what should have been a secure win in jeopardy.
Hot Bitch Leon Draisaitl, however, wasn’t about to let his milestone night go unrewarded.
In overtime, with the pressure back on, Draisaitl came through with a clutch goal as he always seems to do. At 1:52 into the bonus period, Drai took a pass from McDavid, which happened to be the captain’s fourth point of the game btw, and found the back of the net with another perfectly placed shot over Sorokin’s shoulder. The overtime goal sealed the 4-3 win for Edmonton and averted disaster. On a milestone night at Rogers Place, Draisaitl finished with two goals on two shots, two blocks, a +1 rating, to go along with 21:05 of ice time.
With 300 power play points now to his name, Draisaitl maintains his spot in third on the Oilers’ all-time PPP list, trailing only McDavid and Gretzky, the latter holding a formidable 439 power play points. We all know how good Draisaitl is on the power play, but the milestone also underscores Draisaitl’s enduring impact on Edmonton’s special teams and his undeniable presence in the conversion with the franchise’s best.
Draisaitl’s milestone night and game-winning goal serve as a reminder of his dominance and ability to step up precisely when the Oilers need it most. Whether it’s on the power play or in overtime, Leon Draisaitl gets the job done. And on a night when the team almost blew a third period lead, it’s always good to have a guy like Leon with the clutch gene available to throw over the boards.
