The Edmonton Oilers have inked forward Colton Sceviour to a one-year, two-way contract worth $750,000.
Sceviour came to camp on a professional tryout contract, performed well in training camp, and earned himself a gig on the team. Over six preseason games, Sceviour recorded three assists and had an on-ice goal differential of four-to-three while playing at even-strength.
Last season, Sceviour played with the Pittsburgh Penguins and scored five goals and 10 points over 46 games. His best seasons came with the Florida Panthers and Dallas Stars when he scored 11 goals in both 2015-16 and 2017-18.
When word came out that Josh Archibald was out indefinitely with an illness, it became inevitable that Sceviour would crack the team and earn himself a contract. Sceviour has a fair amount of penalty-killing experience at the NHL level and he can fill that hole that Archibald leaves in the lineup.
Also, as Jason Gregor mentioned, the Oilers made a few paper transactions to maximize Long-Term Injured Reserve space. They moved Archibald to the LTIR and Zack Kassian to the regular IR, sent Philip Broberg down to the AHL, and called up Kyle Turris, who passed through waivers earlier this week.
Edmonton’s roster for tonight’s season-opener with the Vancouver Canucks is now set. You can view it at PuckPedia.
