This afternoon, Edmonton Oilers GM, Ken Holland, announced that Philip Broberg will be joining the team in the playoff bubble rather than returning to Sweden as per the original plan.
With Mike Green opting-out from returning for the playoffs, the Oilers had an open spot on the back end to bring into the bubble and Philip Broberg will be the one occupying that spot. By all accounts, Broberg has performed very well in training camp and has earned a spot among the Oilers’ 10 defencemen that they’re allowed to bring. While we still have no idea whether he’ll see any game action or not, it has to be considered a positive that Broberg performed well enough with the team to be brought along for this year’s playoff push.
Broberg, the eighth overall pick at last year’s NHL Entry Draft, posted one goal and eight points in 45 games in his first season with Skelleftea, Sweden’s top league. Back in March, Holland told reporters that the plan is for Broberg to participate in training camp, but return to the SHL for a sophomore season in 2021-22.
