The Day After 81.0: Regular-season finale carries more weight for Oilers after shootout loss to Avalanche

Game 82 of the regular season has suddenly become a must-win for the Oilers.
After a 2-1 shootout loss to Colorado, Edmonton can finish anywhere from first to fourth in the Pacific Division, depending on how the final few days unfold.
Though the Avalanche have already locked up the Presidents’ Trophy and home-ice advantage throughout the Stanley Cup Playoffs, they aren’t easing through these final tune-up games. Monday’s matchup had a playoff feel, with both teams playing a tight-checking, high-intensity style.
Sam Malinski opened the scoring for Colorado midway through the second period, before Connor McDavid buried his 48th of the season later in the frame to tie the game. With nothing settled in regulation or overtime, Nathan MacKinnon scored the winner in the shootout.
The loser point keeps Edmonton alone in second place in the Pacific Division with 91 points through 81 games. Vegas leads with 93 points and one game remaining, while Anaheim and Los Angeles sit at 90 and 89 points, respectively, with two games left.
The conclusion of this pillow fight will come right down to the wire. The worst-case scenario for the Oilers would involve falling into the second wild-card spot, where they’d line up against the Avalanche.
What they said…
Edmonton head coach Kris Knoblauch on the team’s recent scoring struggles…
“We’re unfortunate to only score one goal in the last two games. It’s not that we’re sitting back and not getting chances. We’ve had some. We’ve seen two really good goaltending performances both these nights.“You need to score goals to win games, but this group has done a good job generating chances. We just have to put them away.”
Oilers goaltender Connor Ingram on his approach and the team finding its rhythm…
“I don’t really know what I’m doing out there, just trying to stop the puck. You’ve got to find the save somewhere.“This is when you want to hit your peak and I think we’re hitting our stride a little bit here. Just sticking with it. We went on that stretch a couple of games ago with five in a row and that’s the kind of hockey we need to play. As long as we keep doing what we’re doing we’ll be just fine.”
Oilers defenceman Mattias Ekholm on generating offence and staying structured…
“With the lineup we have right now, we’ve got to find ways to score more goals. Obviously we’ve got some guys out, but every team does and we have to deal with injuries. That’s part of it. I think we’ve got a strong lineup in here that can all score goals, and it’s just been a little bit of a slump these last two games.“As long as we take care of the defensive side, we’re still in games, and we have been in both of these. You’ve got to keep building. Playoff hockey is different than the regular season in that sense.”
Colorado assistant coach Dave Hakstol on his team’s mindset late in the season…
“Forget about the standings, it still matters. Winning and losing matters and the group in the room did a good job getting ready to play. Wedgewood was good, he was rock solid all the way through. I thought he did a really nice job for us. It’s a continuation of what he’s done throughout the season.“It’s Game 81, so everybody knows what they’re doing and how we’re going to go about our business. It’ll be nice to get Bednar back as soon as possible.”
Avalanche goaltender Scott Wedgewood on staying sharp despite having little at stake…
“I think maybe at times you can be a little lazy in these games with nothing to play for, with your habits and details. Guys might play on the conservative side with shot blocks and things like that, but it didn’t feel that way on my end. They were still closing gaps on guys, not letting them tee up one-timers and just doing the right detailed things to prevent scoring chances.“They’re going to play a tight defensive game and they’re fighting for points. To come away with two is obviously a nice bonus near the end here.”
Up next…
The Oilers will close out their regular-season schedule Thursday when they host Vancouver. A regulation loss by Vegas against Seattle on Wednesday would open the door for Edmonton to win the Pacific Division.
That said, a loss to the Canucks would allow both the Ducks and Kings to jump the Oilers in the standings with wins in their remaining games. Anaheim will play in Minnesota and Nashville this week, while Los Angeles goes on the road to face Vancouver and Calgary.
