The Oilers have opened their four-game homestand with two wins. Edmonton held off a San Jose Sharks team desperate for points on Tuesday, with five different scorers finding the back of the net in a 5-3 victory.
Dmitry Orlov opened the scoring for San Jose seven minutes into the first period, but the Oilers responded with three goals in just over four minutes to take control. The Sharks battled back to tie the game with two goals in the second, but Edmonton took over in the third, scoring twice on 15 shots to seal the win.
Max Jones, who entered the lineup in place of the injured Leon Draisaitl, scored what stood as the game-winner five minutes into the third period. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Connor Murphy, Vasily Podkolzin, and Zach Hyman also scored, while Connor Ingram stopped 22 of 25 shots for his second consecutive victory.
With Draisaitl out for the remainder of the regular season, this is the type of blueprint the Oilers will need down the stretch. Edmonton must generate offence throughout the lineup while relying on structured team defence and steady goaltending to avoid chasing games.
The win moves Edmonton into a tie with Anaheim for first place in the Pacific Division with 77 points, though the Ducks hold two games in hand. Vegas sits just one point back of both teams.

What they said…

Head coach Kris Knoblauch on how the Oilers played without Leon Draisaitl…
“Having some adversity, missing some guys, is OK for a team, as long as we have guys who are capable of stepping up and playing better. I believe we do, so we should be all right.
“I liked how we came out and played most of the third period. I thought we simplified our game, played more tenaciously. We were a lot more direct.”
Connor Murphy on scoring his first goal since being acquired by Edmonton from Chicago…
“I don’t know how many games I’ve had on St. Patrick’s Day, but I’ll take any sort of luck I can get, however it comes. Everyone says it’s cliché for everyone to chip in, but it really is true.
“When offence doesn’t come as easily, it takes being responsible with your play. It doesn’t even mean you need to score that many. It takes what it takes, whether it’s scoring five or winning 1-0.”
Adam Henrique on how the Oilers need everyone to step up in Draisaitl’s absence…
“We talked about how no one guy is going to replace him. It’s something we’re going to have to do collectively from here to the end of the season and see where that takes us.
“I thought tonight we did a good job responding at different points in the game, and contributions like that offensively are big.”
San Jose goalie Alex Nedeljkovic on the Sharks fighting for their playoff lives…
“Every game is a playoff game now. Every game matters. We need to be at or near our best every night. If we’re not picking up points, someone else is.
“We’ve still got games in hand, and we play them again, plus Anaheim a couple of times. There are more four-point games coming. The message is simple: every game is a playoff game for us right now.”
Sharks defender Dmitry Orlov on what went wrong in San Jose’s loss to Edmonton…
“It’s puck management. Turnovers in the neutral zone force us to defend more and spend too much time in our zone. Against a team like Edmonton, if you don’t have the puck, it’s going to hurt you. We kind of fed into that tonight.”

Up next…

The Oilers will wrap up their four-game homestand this week, hosting the Panthers and Lightning on Thursday and Saturday. Next week, Edmonton will hit the road to face Utah and Vegas before returning home to play the Ducks.
