There’s a very real possibility we’re watching one of Connor McDavid’s best stretches unfold in front of our eyes.
The shackles have seemingly broken free on his game, as in the most recent 10 games, McDavid has racked up 10 goals, 14 assists, 26 points and a staggering 47 shots on goal.
His next-level play was on full display Sunday night against the Vegas Golden Knights, as for what feels like the 10th straight game, he scored another highlight-reel goal. Leon Draisaitl hit him in stride in the neutral zone, and McDavid burnt the Golden Knights wide, driving to the net and buried the puck on the back door to give the Oilers a 1-0 lead.
With the goal and his recent scoring streak, he’s now on pace for a cool 50 goals on the season.
McDavid has had some tremendous 10-game spans during his career, but it hasn’t been since the 2022-23 season — the year he scored 64 goals — when he’s put together a 10-game run like this. There’s been stretches where he’s put up more points, like between April 19th and May 8th when he put up nine goals and 29 points, but there’s only been one 10-game stretch where he’s put up more goals, which came between February 21st and March 11th, 2023.
This run, dating back to Edmonton’s 9-4 win over the Seattle Kraken, has been huge for the team. They had been shutout the game before 1-0 by the Minnesota Wild, and since, McDavid has carried this team to a 7-2-1 stretch.
The scoring surge from McDavid has helped the Oilers score 44 goals in all situations over that time, six more than the Avalanche and Senators, tied with 38, and has lifted surged Edmonton in the standings. Heading into Monday’s games, they sit tied in standings points with the Vegas Golden Knights, and sit just two points back of the Pacific Division-leading Anaheim Ducks.
Both teams have games in hand on the Oilers, but Edmonton has one thing in their schedule playing to their advantage. Of their remaining 45 games this season, 34 of them, or 75 percent, come against teams in the Western Conference, and 18 of which come against teams in the Pacific Division.
They play the Golden Knights and Ducks three times, the Calgary Flames, Los Angeles Kings and San Jose Sharks three times, the Vancouver Canucks twice, and the Kraken once more.
So how realistic is it for McDavid to score 50 goals this season? There’s a legitimate shot.
In fact, if you look at his average totals against each team the Oilers have games against left this season, he should finish the season with 47 goals, 85 assists and 132 points.
This, of course, is but a rough estimate, not an exact science, but it gives an idea of what to expect. It doesn’t account for McDavid blowing the doors off and having spike games where he scores above his averages, nor does it account for a quiet game here or there.
McDavid, of course, said ahead of this season he wanted to shoot the puck more, and it’s taken time for him to get there. His shots on goal per hour rate has risen to 4.44, close behind the 5.0 shots on goal per hour he had in his 64-goal 2022-23 season.
Let’s see if he can hit 50 for the second time in his career.
