Contrary to most NHL teams, the Edmonton Oilers aren’t exactly in need of high-end offensive help. With the heavy firepower already in place at the top, their list of needs differs somewhat from that of other organizations.
What they do need, however, is a reliable two-way contributor and someone capable of playing complementary minutes in the bottom half of the lineup. And if that player can chip in some secondary offence? Even better.
The NCAA free-agent market isn’t always the most direct path to immediate NHL impact, but this year, the Oilers may have a player who fits their needs perfectly.
According to The Sheet’s Jeff Marek, Edmonton has interest in University of Michigan forward T.J. Hughes, who has been highly sought after as a free agent for several years now.
At the collegiate level, Hughes has established himself as a highly productive forward, highlighted by a career year in his senior season. Whether that production translates immediately to the professional level remains to be seen, but the appeal lies in the details of his game.
Now 24, Hughes has officially hit the 50-point mark for the first time in his NCAA career, becoming one of just four players in the nation to do so this season. That brings his collegiate totals to an impressive 172 points (66 goals, 106 assists) in 152 games with the Michigan Wolverines.
Serving as captain, the Hamilton, Ontario native has been a driving force behind a team now one win away from a Big Ten Championship and a deep NCAA tournament run. While there are many intangibles in his game that make him this year’s free agent cornw jewel, it’s his leadership that is consistently cited as one of his defining traits.
Simply put, Hughes’ profile feels built for professional hockey. He thrives in all situations — power play, penalty kill, and even-strength — and brings a well-rounded, detail-oriented approach. He plays a responsible two-way game, capable of dictating play in all three zones. Whether it’s producing a key goal or closing out a game defensively, he can be trusted in critical moments.
He doesn’t cheat for offence, but when opportunities present themselves, he can capitalize. Hughes generates offence in a variety of ways, whether that’s working off the half wall, operating in the bumper, or battling in tight areas around the net. While he doesn’t possess an imposing frame at 6-foot, 185-pounds, he consistently attacks the middle of the ice and competes in high-traffic areas.
His strength in the faceoff circle further boosts his projection. Hughes has posted career win rates of 58.9, 60.7, 52.2, and 57 per cent, throughout his NCAA tenure. With 381 faceoff wins this season, he ranks third among full-time Big Ten centres, while his win percentage (57 per cent) sits fifth.
Will his skating hold up against NHL competition? That remains to be seen. While not a high-end skater, he has a functional rather than dynamic stride. He lacks a high-end first step, but it doesn’t appear to deter him at his current level. At the very least, it is something to keep an eye on as he transitions. But he compensates for any of those concerns with a relentless motor, strong positioning, and attention to detail. Ultimately, Hughes feels like a natural fit for a team like Edmonton as a projected bottom-six contributor with sneaky offensive upside. This year’s free agent crop lacks polished NHL talent, but Hughes could step into a role relatively quickly and provide exactly the type of depth the Oilers are looking for.
Michigan will face Ohio State on Saturday for this year’s Big Ten Championship. Regardless of the result, a dominant season assured them a spot in this year’s Frozen Four, which means any team showing interest will have to wait until April to land their newest recruit. With little time to adjust, the timing won’t be perfect. But then again, he could prove to be a solid addition just in time for a playoff push.
