The Edmonton Oilers had no issue with the Connor Bedard-less Chicago Blackhawks on Monday night, cruising to a 4-1 victory to open their mini two-game road trip in the Central Division.
After a dominant first few minutes for the visiting team, Zach Hyman opened the scoring with five minutes left to go in the opening frame. Evan Bouchard scored just 16 seconds into the second period to give the Oilers what wound up being the game-winning goal.
The Blackhawks finally got on the board with five minutes to go in the third period, but Bouchard responded with an empty-netter in the final minute of play. Leon Draisaitl buried another insurance marker with eight seconds to go on the clock for good measure.
Bouchard led the Oilers with three points while logging 24:31 on the blueline. Goaltender Connor Ingram turned aside 29 of 30 shots for the win. Captain Connor McDavid extended his point streak to a career-high 19 games with two assists.

What they said…

Evan Bouchard on his two-goal game against the Blackhawks…
“I’m happy with where my game’s at. I’ve got to work on the defensive side. I think that’s the main focus. But when you’re playing with guys like Connor and Leon every night, you get them the puck and a lot of times they do the rest. So it’s contributions from all five guys on the ice.”
Connor Ingram on stopping 29 shots in the win over Chicago…
“I felt good. It’s starting to feel more normal every time I get out there. Luckily for me, I’ve been able to play a lot, so you can find a rhythm and just try and stick to it and hold on as long as you can. I thought I felt good today.”
“You take a look at the track record around here over the last couple of years. This is a team that knows how to win hockey games, so those are games you’ve got to hold on to and find a way to get it done. I think we did that.”
Head coach Kris Knobluach on Ingram’s performance in net…
“He played really well. You think about the first shift of the game, he came up with a couple of big saves there, and then the rest of the game he had some nice saves, but we really relied him on in the third period. In the second period in the penalty kill, there were numerous great ace scoring chances that Chicago had, and he played really well. Unfortunately, we gave up that one at the end, but a great effort by him.”
Blackhawks head coach Jeff Blashill on Edmonton’s strong road effort…
“My whole take on the game was the first 15 minutes, they dominated us. The first five minutes of the second, they took it to us. Spencer (Knight) kept us in it through that stretch. I thought the last five of the first and the rest of the game were not bad, and then we were really good in the third.
“Unfortunately a game isn’t 40 minutes long, it’s 60. We’ve talked about it being an Every Night League, and part of an Every Night League is 60-minute games, sometimes 65. You have to make sure you’re as close to your best as you can. Unfortunately, to start the game, we weren’t nearly close to our best. You’re not going to be perfect every night, but you have to be better than that, and they were on top of their game, for sure. They were flying.”
Chicago captain Nick Foligno on the grind of an NHL season…
“Everyone faces it. It’s a reality, obviously. No one’s Superman here. You’re obviously not going to feel great. But I told guys, ‘The last time you feel great in the NHL is your first game.’ I mean, really. It’s a hard league. It’s a league where you have to find your game regardless of how you feel. No one feels good, especially this time of year, so regardless of that, it’s creating your own energy.”

Up next…

The Oilers will be right back in action on Tuesday night when they head to Nashville to face the Predators. This five-game week will continue when Edmonton returns home on Thursday to host the New York Islanders. The weekend will feature another back-to-back, first in Vancouver on Saturday and then at home against St. Louis on Sunday.
