The Oilers’ marquee addition at the 2024 trade deadline has found the back of the net for the first time with his new club.
With about five minutes left in the second period of their Tuesday night game against the Montreal Canadiens, Edmonton had a good cycle going when Evan Bouchard found a streaking Matthias Ekholm pinching into the offensive zone to make a play. He got the puck to the front of the net where Adam Henrique, parked in front of the crease, potted home an easy tap in past Sam Montembeault for his first as an Oiler.
Henrique was acquired along with Sam Carrick in a three-team trade with the Ducks and Lightning on March 6th that saw multiple draft picks, including this year’s first round pick head out the door. This was because Edmonton was able to get his salary retained at 75 percent so they could use him and Carrick to bolster their forward depth.
It has taken him some time to adjust to his new team, but this goal could not have come at a better time since a confident Henrique going into the playoffs will be pivotal for the Oilers. The third round pick of 2008 Draft by the Devils may only have two playoff runs under his belt, but made quite the name for himself back in 2012 because he had a knack for series winning goals.
Heading into tonight’s game, he had appeared in five games since the trade and has only one assist in that span. In total, Henrique has played in 65 games this year while racking up 43 points (18 goals and 25 assists) prior to tonight’s tally.
Henrique will look to get on a roll when he and the Oilers host the Sabres on Thursday night. You can catch the action on Sportsnet West with puck drop scheduled for 7 p.m. MDT.
