Welcome to Draft Lottery Season

Hello darkness my old friend, I’ve come to talk with you again.
Obviously, this is where none of us wanted to be. We all had aspirations of a deep Oilers playoff run after the team put together a season that generated some legitimate optimism.
But here we are. After getting dropped in four games by the Chicago Blackhawks in the play-in round, the Oilers are unfortunately back in familiar territory — the draft lottery.
On Monday at 4:00 PM MT, the NHL will host Phase 2 of the draft lottery, which will determine picks No. 1 and No. 9 through No. 15. One of the teams that lost in the play-in round will receive the right to draft Alexis Lafreniere with the top pick, a fantastic consolation prize for their pain, while the other teams will get seeded based on their regulation points percentage.
The Penguins, Oilers, Blue Jackets/Maple Leafs, Panthers, Predators, Rangers, Jets, and Wild will all have an equal 12.5 percent chance of having their name drawn.
After that, the rest of the draft spots will be determined by regular-season points percentage. So, from an Oilers’ perspective, the team is either picking first-overall or they’re getting a mid-first-round pick. If the Penguins win, Edmonton would have the No. 15 pick and if anybody else wins they’ll have the No. 14 pick.
Let’s hope that good old Oilers draft lottery magic is still on our side. Alexis Lafreniere would look great in an Oilers uniform. Maybe fifth time’s the charm.
