Many Oilers players, including Connor McDavid and Leon Draisatil, first got word that the Blues issued offer sheets to Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway while spending time with Robert Thomas.
Fun fact from Robert Thomas today at the NHL Player Media Tour:
When the offer sheet news broke, he was *with* multiple Oilers players including Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. Awkward moment and Thomas explained that they weren't too happy 😂

“It was actually funny. I was sitting with a couple of the Oilers when the news broke. I had lunch after training. I was with McDavid, Draisaitl, Hyman [laughs],” Thomas told Daily Faceoff’s Matt Larkin. “It was pretty funny. Yeah, they weren’t too happy with it. I had no idea what happened. I was just sitting there eating and I guess it popped up on one of their phones and they heard about it and they weren’t too happy about it.”
While the exact location of where this hangout took place was not disclosed by Thomas, it is understandable why things would have gotten awkward between him and members of the Oilers. After all, what should have been a normal get-together with fellow combatants took an unexpected turn when it was discovered their teams were in a spat via offer sheets.
I am sure Oilers fans felt the same way McDavid, Drasatil and the other Oilers present that day must have felt when the news first broke of the offer sheets. After all, Broberg and Holloway were two key secondary contributors to Edmonton’s run to Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final where they were able to claw back from a 3-0 series deficit and fell a win short of hoisting the trophy. To see that happen only for two younger members to be snagged up by the Blues was no doubt a tough pill to swallow.
It certainly didn’t help matters when Holloway broke his silence on the offer sheet and revealed on a St. Louis-based podcast that the threat of one was made known well before the Oilers began negotiating with him. This only further highlighted the bizarre nature of how this all went down and the fact that Edmonton was left with neither player when it was all said and done.
Some could understand why Stan Bowman and company opted to let them go to the Mid-West, especially with Draisatil extended while McDavid and Evan Bouchard are due to get a massive pay raise soon. At the same time, it is not the best look to see two former first-round picks get snagged up by a team within their conference and the only things they have to show for it are a second-round pick, two third-round picks, and Paul Fischer.
Either way, all future matchups between the Oilers and Blues have gotten a whole lot more interesting going forward given what transpired this summer. That was especially the case with McDavid and Draisaitl who got frosty when finding out about the offer sheets with Thomas.
