The Edmonton Oilers made an emergency recall on Tuesday before their game against the Utah Mammoth.
James Hamblin has been called up from the Bakersfield Condors. The 26-year-old Edmonton native has scored 23 goals and 14 assists in 54 games in the AHL. Hamblin played a combined 41 NHL games in the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons, scoring two career goals and three total points.
Sportnet’s Mark Spector said he believes that Hamblin is the 13th forward and won’t be in the lineup against the Mammoth. The Oilers have a two-game roadtrip beginning in Utah on Tuesday night, and then heading to Nevada to face the Vegas Golden Knights on Thursday.
He’s been a productive player at the AHL level. This season, he’s scored the second-most goals on the Condors and the sixth-most points. Last season, he had a career high of 45 points.
Edmonton only have 12 forwards currently available on the roster due to the myriad of injuries their lineup has faced lately. Leon Draisaitl and Trent Frederic have been subtracted from the lineup from last week, and there’s no timeline for Frederic’s return.
Curtis Lazar has been participating in practices and is nearing a return next week in April. He hasn’t played since March 3 against the Ottawa Senators.
Currently, Josh Samanski, Max Jones, and Roby Järventie are all in the lineup, despite playing more games with the Condors than the Oilers this season.
Mattias Janmark is out for the remainder of the season.
Hamblin went undrafted and walked onto the Bakersfield Condors after five seasons of junior hockey with the Medicine Hat Tigers. In his 20-year-old season, he scored 36 goals and 92 points in 63 games.
