No need to worry about whether or not the Edmonton Oilers can reach three consecutive wins. This time, the winning streak ended at one.
After picking up a commanding 4-1 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Monday, the Oilers dropped the second leg of their back-to-back on Tuesday night against the Nashville Predators, falling 4-3 in overtime.
Edmonton’s quick two-game road trip through the lower-middle of the Central Division yielded three out of a possible four points. Not bad, even if the goal was back-to-back wins over beatable teams.
Nashville opened the scoring just under three minutes into the first period when Steven Stamkos ripped his 20th goal of the season past Tristan Jarry, who was activated off long-term injured reserve before the game. Zach Hyman answered back late in the first on the power play, extending Connor McDavid’s career-high point streak to 20 games in the process.
The two teams traded four goals in the second period. Erik Haula scored three minutes into the middle frame, and Leon Draisaitl answered a few minutes later with his 25th goal of the season. Hyman put the Oilers ahead for the first time with another power-play goal in the second half of the period, but Roman Josi knotted the score at 3-3 less than a minute later.
In overtime, the home side capitalized on a misplay by Jarry and defenceman Evan Bouchard to secure the extra point. The puck was flipped over Bouchard’s head, Jarry came out to play it, and Brady Skjei found Josi all alone near the faceoff circle for the game-winner.
For Nashville, the win snapped a five-game losing streak against the Oilers dating back to the 2023-24 season. Edmonton hadn’t lost to the Predators since November of 2023, and their last loss in Nashville came back in December of 2022, also by a 4-3 overtime score.
The Oilers are now tied with the Golden Knights for the top spot in the Pacific Division with 54 points, though Vegas has three games in hand on Edmonton. The Preds are now only one point out of a playoff spot in the Western Conference, an impressive turnaround considering they were in the basement with a 8-13-4 record at the end of November.

What they said…

Head coach Kris Knoblauch on the Oilers being a step behind Nashville…
“I think we got off to a slow start and looked like we were a step behind. They looked a lot fresher and a little faster than us tonight. We just wanted to be easy. I know there was a lot of turnovers, which allowed them to get the puck and counter on us where we had to defend.”
Zach Hyman on how the Oilers can be better in back-to-backs…
“We could be better in back-to-backs, making simple plays. I thought we were too complicated and caused too many unforced errors. I thought Jars played great, and then the special teams were good.”
“You want to stack points. Even when you lose games, it’s better to gain a point. But I think we’re coming along. I think we have another level to get to. We’ve got some guys returning from injury, obviously, which is a great sign. I thought it was a good first game for them. I thought [Tristan Jarry] was outstanding earning us the extra point. I thought [Jake Walman] was good in his return, so good to get those guys back.”
Nashville captain Roman Josi on the Predators climbing up the standings…
“We’ve worked really hard. A month and a half, two months ago, we were really far behind and way out of a playoff spot, and we kind of rallied and came back. Now we’re close to a playoff spot, which is huge. It shows the hard work we’ve put in. We’ve just got to keep it going though. We’re in a fight, and it’s going to be hard until the end.”
“The players they have, they’re going to get their chances. They’re going to have some zone time. You’re going to have to defend. But I felt like most stretches, we played them pretty well. McDavid had two points, I think? I guess that’s a good night if you keep him to two.”

Up next…

The Oilers will return home to face the New York Islanders on Thursday before hitting the road again for another back-to-back on the weekend. Edmonton will visit Vancouver to take on the Canucks on Saturday, then return home to host the St. Louis Blues on Sunday. The latter will mark the start of an eight-game homestand that runs through the rest of January.
