While Mike Babcock and Bruce Cassidy are dominating the conversation surrounding the Edmonton Oilers‘ head coaching position, there may be another name to add to the fold.
When talking about the Babcock situation in the latest episode of 32 Thoughts, Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman mentioned other names the Oilers have considered for the vacant head coach job. While names like Craig Berube and Peter Laviolette come as no surprise, one name that was new to the conversation was Jim Hiller.
“But one of the things I had heard was that this year, they just felt like, even the best players felt, they needed to be put back in their place sometimes. That maybe they had too much say, too much control, and they needed somebody who was going to say, ‘no, you guys are great players, but I’m the boss and I’ll make the decisions’.“And Cassidy, for example, is not a guy who’s afraid to do that. And they interviewed Berube. And they interviewed Laviolette. I heard Laviolette was there last week and interviewed very well. I think they interviewed Jim Hiller. I’m sure they interviewed some other people. But, I’ve heard that the players recognize that they probably needed somebody who would tell them ‘no’ more often. And that’s how we got to Babcock.”
Hiller was previously the head coach of the Los Angeles Kings. Initially serving as an assistant coach under Todd McLellan from 2022 to 2024, Hiller was promoted to head coach with an interim tag on February 4th, 2024 after McLellan was fired. Hiller had the interim tag removed that summer, and remained head coach for the 2024-25 season and most of the 2025-26 season before he was fired on March 1st, 2026.
Hiller coached the Kings to a 93-58-24 record, with their .600 points percentage being the 10th-best during his tenure. However, that didn’t come with much playoff success, as the Kings fell in the first round in 2024 and 2025, both at the hands of the Oilers.
The Kings were Hiller’s only experience as an NHL head coach, but he has spent parts of 10 seasons as an assistant coach for the Detroit Red Wings, Toronto Maple Leafs, New York Islanders and the Kings. Most interestingly, he was an assistant coach under Babcock when with the Red Wings and Maple Leafs, so it’s not out of the realm of possibility that the interview could have been for an assistant coach, especially considering reports that another former Babcock assistant in D.J. Smith could join the Oilers if Babcock is hired.
