It appears that Evan Bouchard is doing well after suffering a scary hit Thursday in the World Championship quarter-final.
Edmonton Oilers general manager Stan Bowman joined Oilers Now later in the day, and when asked about Bouchard, Bowman mentioned he was texting with the defenceman, who was “okay” after the hit.
“Kyle Dubas has been very proactive, given as soon as the play happened, he texted me, and I’ve been texting with Evan as well, so we’re in touch with him, obviously,” Bowman said on the show.
“He’s injured, but he’s doing well… thankfully it’s not worse than it was, but clearly it was a terrible hit. It’s disappointing to see that happen.
“Thankfully, it’s May, and a long time till training camp, so I think you know everyone in Edmonton knows how great Boosh is.
“I think maybe some other teams are seeing how effective…he’s playing a great hockey for Canada over there, so it’s unfortunate that he’s not gonna be playing the remainder there, but I think he’s gonna be okay.”
Bouchard sustained the hit midway through the first period of Thursday’s quarterfinal game at the IIHF World Championships between Canada and the United States. As he was skating the puck up the ice and entering the zone, U.S. defenceman Ryan Lindgren stepped up and hit Bouchard in the head. Bouchard was slow to get up, and then he needed help getting to the change room. He didn’t return to the game, while Lindgren was ejected from the game for a hit to the head.
At this point in time, a timeline of Bouchard’s recovery has not been provided. However, the Oilers have at least four months before the start of the regular season, so it would need to be a significant injury for Bouchard to miss the start of next season.
Bouchard had been having a good tournament up to that point, accumulating a goal and five assists for six points in eight games. This comes after a career year with the Oilers, where he had 21 goals and 74 assists for 95 points in 82 games in the regular season, along with one goal and six assists for seven points in six playoff games.
