The Edmonton Oilers are recalling two of the American Hockey League’s hottest scorers.
Isaac Howard and Quinn Hutson were recalled to the Oilers roster Friday, the club announced. For Howard, it marks his first recall since he was sent down to the Bakersfield Condors in mid-November.
He’s been nothing short of tremendous during his stint with the team, scoring 10 goals and 23 points in 16 games. Despite the few games played, his point totals are tied for fifth in the league in rookie scoring, while his 1.44 point per game pace leads all rookies. Howard started the year with the Oilers appearing in 17 games, scoring two goals and three points, but struggling to find his way.
Hutson, meanwhile, gets his second recall in the last two weeks, having appeared in three games against the Pittsburgh Penguins, Boston Bruins and Minnesota Wild. He scored his first NHL goal against the Bruins, and has been nothing short of a force to be reckoned with in the AHL. He’s scored 19 goals and 32 points in 26 games this season, both marks that lead all Condors players, but all AHL rookies, too. He has a six-goal and point leads on the next highest-scoring rookie.
The Oilers have struggled to get offence from their bottom-six this season. The team as a whole have scored just 2.39 goals for per hour at five-on-five, the 21st-ranked mark in the league, but that falls to a measly 1.25 goals for per hour when Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl are off the ice.
If the Oilers hope to get the most out of Howard and Hutson, getting them proper minutes and usage will be key. Howard averaged just 9:30 in ice-time in his 17 games earlier this year, while Hutson played just 7:34.
Edmonton hosts the Philadelphia Flyers Saturday afternoon before the Nashville Predators come to town on Tuesday night.
