That’s now back-to-back wins for the Edmonton Oilers.
On Tuesday night, the Oilers defeated the San Jose Sharks 5-3 on St. Patrick’s Day, giving them a seven-point lead over the young team. It also moved them into a tie for top spot in the Pacific Division, pending the outcome of the Vegas Golden Knights game. Let’s take a look at what went on in this one.
San Jose took the lead a little over seven minutes into the first period, as Jason Dickinson turned it over in the neutral zone, giving the Sharks a two-on-one. A cross-ice pass to Dmitry Orlov gave the Sharks a 1-0 lead.
Exactly 10 minutes into the first, the Oilers scored the game-tying goal. On a power play, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins channeled his inner Leon Draisaitl, one-timing it past the Sharks netminder on a cross-ice pass from Connor McDavid.

It took the Oilers another 75 seconds to take their first lead of the game. The Oilers had a neutral-zone faceoff, with Jack Roslovic coming in to win it. The puck found its way back to Connor Murphy, who wristed it past the netminder to make it 2-1.

Then, the Oilers took a 3-1 lead just three minutes later. After a strong forecheck from Trent Frederic, the puck found its way to Adam Henrique, who bumped it to an onrushing Vasily Podkolzin. The Russian winger ripped it bar and in from the top of the slot.

However, the second period belonged to the Sharks. Eight minutes and 17 seconds into the middle frame, Pavol Regenda deflected a shot past Connor Ingram to make it a one-goal game. With just over five minutes left in the frame, Darnell Nurse’s shot missed the net, rang around the boards and eluded two Oilers. Kiefer Sherwood received a breakaway, beating Ingram to tie the game.

Five minutes into the third period, the Oilers retook their lead. Frederic got in on the forecheck and got the puck to Max Jones, who found Henrique on the side of the goal. Henrique’s shot was saved, but Jones was the first on it to score his second of the season.

The Oilers took their second two-goal lead of the game just over eight minutes into the final frame. Mattias Ekholm’s shot from the point was deflected on goal by Matthew Savoie, with Zach Hyman the first on the puck right in front of the goal. As you can imagine, Hyman cleaned up to score his 29th of the season.
Takeaways…
Without Leon Draisaitl, the Oilers will lean heavily on Connor McDavid. He picked up an assist on their power-play goal, but the big note of this game was their depth. The Oilers scored four goals during five-on-five action in this game, with the fourth line getting two of those goals. There were five different goal scorers, which is exactly what the Oilers need for the rest of the season.
It was another good game for Trent Frederic. He picked up his second assist of the season on the Oilers’ fourth-goal, and was a big reason that the fourth line was responsible for two goals in this one. Speaking of that fourth line, Adam Henrique had his best game of the season on Tuesday, picking up two primary assists, while Max Jones is a much-needed spark plug on that line.
McDavid only had one point, but his line of Matthew Savoie and Zach Hyman generated the fifth Oilers goal of the game. Savoie picked up an assist on it, giving him two goals and 10 points in the 11 games since the Olympic break. Hyman scored it, which was his 29th goal in his last 44 games.
It’s nice to see the two former Blackhawks combine for a goal. Dickinson helped with the faceoff that led to Connor Murphy’s first goal as an Oiler midway through the first period. He played alongside Darnell Nurse, and the pair had 24.35 per cent of the expected goals during five-on-five action. Not great.
Connor Ingram made his third consecutive start, stopping 27 of 30 shots for a .900 save percentage. It’s hard to fault him on any of the three goals he allowed: a two-on-one, a crazy deflection, and a breakaway. You have to assume he’ll start in the next game.
With the win, the Oilers moved into a tie for the Pacific Division lead, albeit with two additional games played over the Anaheim Ducks. Additionally, the Vegas Golden Knights are in action against the Buffalo Sabres, and if they win, they move into first.
Next up for the Oilers will be a rematch of the last two Stanley Cup Finals, as they welcome the Florida Panthers on Thursday at 7 p.m. MT.
