To say things got uncomfortable for Mitch Marner and his family this spring might be underselling it.
The ex-Toronto Maple Leafs, now Vegas Golden Knights forward revealed in an interview with TSN’s Mark Masters this week that after the Leafs fell to the Florida Panthers in the second round of last seasons playoffs, he had to hire a full-time security team.
It all started with a call from his father-in-law minutes after getting home that night.
“[He] goes, ‘I just want to let you know,” Marner said. “‘We’ve got people sending us screenshots of a guy posting your address online, saying that if people want to come pay us a visit and say, you know, their goodbyes, in a quotation way, here’s the address.’ And it was a little tough, obviously.”
The security team remained for two weeks after the final game, held on May 18th of this year.
“Just to make sure no one’s coming to the house,” he said. “Also, the safety of trying to walk your dog or child, so that was a little unfortunate. Yeah, we all deal with this stuff. Sometimes it happens.”

  • Calgary Flames forward Mikael Backlund said earlier this week that “it’s obvious” the team will trade defenceman Rasmus Andersson at some point. “Yeah, he’s getting traded. It’s obvious, but the team wants value. He wants a big contract. So he wants to play well. The team needs him to play well. So, just go out and play. I talked to him, too, and he doesn’t want to be a distraction. So it’s all good. It’s too bad it’s come to this. I don’t think that they’re close to getting an agreement or anything, but you never know. Things could change. We’ll see.”
  • Team USA general manager Bill Guerin said the team is “planning and expecting” Florida Panthers winger Matthew Tkachuk to be available to them for the tournament next February. Tkachuk recently underwent surgery after suffering a torn adductor muscle and sports hernia playing in the 4-Nations Face-Off.
  • The San Jose Sharks will remain at the SAP Center for another 25 years. Sharks Sport and Entertainment and the City of San Jose announced earlier this week they reached an agreement to extend the teams lease of the arena through the 2050-51 season.
