The Edmonton Oilers are pulling out the alternate away jerseys one last time on this road trip, and honestly, who’s going to complain? They haven’t lost in them yet. Not once. So yeah, they’re wearing them in Nashville, and all fingers crossed, that streak continues.
Is it silly? Yah. Does anyone really care? Not even a little bit.
Maybe the Oilers are winning because Connor McDavid is on his longest point streak ever, tearing through the league like he’s playing a completely different sport. Maybe it’s because Leon Draisaitl is heating up at exactly the right time, reminding everyone that when he’s locked in, he’s one of the most dangerous players out there. Maybe it’s because Zach Hyman was snake-bitten for way too long and now suddenly can’t stop scoring. Maybe it’s the new goaltending situation, which, for once, is actually working in a good way instead of being a source of constant stress.
Or maybe it’s the jerseys. We’ll really never know.
Sports superstitions are ridiculous until they’re not. Players have their routines. They eat the same meals. They put their equipment on in the same order. They take the same route to the rink. Why? Because it worked once, and they’re not about to mess with it. Teams are no different. When you find something that coincides with winning, you stick with it.
The alternate jerseys have become that thing for the Oilers. They put them on, they win. Simple as that. Whether it’s psychological, coincidental, or actual voodoo doesn’t really matter. The record speaks for itself.
There’s something to be said for confidence, even if it comes from something as arbitrary as uniform choice. When players believe they’re going to win, when they step on the ice feeling good about their chances, it affects how they play. If the jerseys are part of that mental edge, then wear them every game for all anyone cares.
McDavid’s point streak has been historic. He’s been unstoppable, and watching him operate at this level has been a privilege. Draisaitl’s resurgence alongside him has given the Oilers two elite centers rolling at the same time, which is a nightmare for other teams trying to line-match. Hyman breaking out of his slump (if you can even call it that) has added another dimension to the offence, giving Edmonton one of the most productive lines in the NHL.
And then there’s the goaltending. Connor Ingram has been solid. Calvin Pickard is doing ok. For the first time in a while, Oilers fans aren’t holding their breath every time the puck enters their defensive zone. That’s huge. When you trust your goalie, the whole team plays differently.
So is it the jerseys? Probably not. Is it the combination of everything working at once—strong offence, solid goaltending, timely secondary scoring? Almost certainly. But the jerseys haven’t hurt, and in hockey, you don’t mess with what’s working.
The Oilers are undefeated in the alternates. They’re wearing them in Nashville. If they win, the magic continues. If they lose, well, maybe the streak was fun while it lasted. But until that happens, don’t expect anyone in the Oilers organization to question it.
Superstitions are silly until they’re not. And right now, these jerseys are undefeated. That’s all that matters.
