One of the game’s greats continues to rack up the honours.
On Monday, the NHL announced that Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid has been named the league’s First Star of the Week.
It comes after a dominating week that was for the Richmond Hill, Ont. native. In four games, he posted four goals and six assists, leading all skaters last week with 10 points. McDavid put his name on the scoresheet in each of the Oilers’ games – scoring twice against the Buffalo Sabres last Tuesday. In that game, he moved into second place all-time in even-strength points as an Oiler, surpassing Jari Kurri with his 725th point at 5-on-5.
He also registered assists on all four of Edmonton’s goals against the Detroit Red Wings two days later. He then notched two goals and three points against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday before picking up a helper against the Montreal Canadiens on Sunday.
Edmonton went 2-1-1 last week, losing to the Sabres in overtime, beating the Red Wings and Maple Leafs before falling to the Canadiens.
McDavid is on a little bit of a roll as of late. He’s riding a six-game point streak as the new week begins, which has seen him pot seven goals and nine assists for 16 points over that span. He also has 20 points over the past eight games.
Through 33 games this season, the 28-year-old has 18 goals and 34 assists for 52 points. He ranks first in the NHL in helpers, while only trailing Colorado Avalanche star Nathan MacKinnon, who has 55 points, in the race for the Art Ross Trophy.
McDavid’s play has been a huge part of the Oilers turning things around after another sluggish start to the season. With a healthier lineup, McDavid and company have crawled out of the depths of the Western Conference and are back in a playoff spot, looking to contend for a top-three position in the Pacific Division.
As of Monday, the Oilers (15-12-6) are fourth in the division, hanging onto the first Wild Card spot in the West. They will be visiting the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday night, the third game of their five-game road trip.
