One of the longest-standing members of the Edmonton Oilers has reached a significant milestone.
On Tuesday night, in a game against the Nashville Predators, Oilers forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins registered the 500th assist of his NHL career, becoming just the sixth player to reach the mark as a member of the franchise.
The helper came late in the game, with the 32-year-old picking up a primary assist on captain Connor McDavid’s third goal of the game, capping off a dominant 6-2 victory over the Predators.
It was clear the Oilers knew of No. 93’s accomplishment, as they were seen celebrating with the veteran center while hats were being scooped off the ice at Rogers Place.
Nugent-Hopkins is the third active member of the Edmonton roster to reach 500 assists, as McDavid and Leon Draisaitl have hit the milestone in previous years. Hockey Hall of Famers Mark Messier, Jari Kurri and some guy named Wayne Gretzky round out the list. Nuge has a little bit of work to do to get close to The Great One, as Gretzky posted 1,086 helpers during his tenure with the franchise.
The 2011 first-overall pick has assists in back-to-back games, giving him 23 on the season thus far. He currently sits fourth on the team in helpers behind McDavid (47), Draisaitl (39) and defenceman Evan Bouchard (31). In 34 games, Nugent-Hopkins also has 11 goals and 34 points, sitting fourth on the team in scoring.
The Burnaby, B.C. native is well on his way to surpassing his assist total from last season, which saw him register 29 apples, along with his 20 goals and 49 points. Throughout the first 14 years of his career with the Oilers, Nuge has been a pretty balanced offensive threat, reaching the 50-point mark eight times, registering 40 assists three times. It might be hard to ever eclipse his performance during the 2022-23 season, when he set career highs in goals (37), assists (67) and points (104).
500 assists might not be the only milestone Nugent-Hopkins reaches this season. Tuesday night was the 993rd regular-season game of his career. He currently sits second all-time in games played as an Oiler, only trailing Hall of Famer Kevin Lowe, who appeared in 1,037 games with the franchise.
The Oilers (21-16-6) sit second in the Pacific Division, just behind the first-place Vegas Golden Knights. Edmonton is back in action on Thursday night when the team visits the Winnipeg Jets.
