Frank Seravalli believes there’s a good chance that the Edmonton Oilers will make a coaching change.
On Thursday, the hockey insider was asked during an appearance on Sportsnet 590 The Fan about what moves the Oilers could make this offseason. A lot of moves are coming, he believes.
“I do think significant changes are coming in Edmonton,” said Seravalli. “I think a coaching change is likely. I think it’s more likely than not that Kris Knoblauch and his staff are sent packing. I think there’s likely to be front office changes coming in Edmonton as they reshape and restructure.
“Do they find a way to convince a team, sweeten a package with a team, to move on from Darnell Nurse? I think that’s needed. It’s almost like a little bit of addition by subtraction. You can’t have a player taking up that much space on your cap and not producing at a level that is commensurate for your team. That’s on top of going out and getting a goalie.”
During exit interviews last Saturday, general manager Stan Bowman said Knoblauch and his staff were going to be evaluated, as well as the job he did. Leon Draisaitl said specifically that he was “concerned” by the direction of the team, after nosediving with a poor regular season and first round exit.
The Oilers lost in six games to the Anaheim Ducks, but injuries did play a factor, with Connor McDavid and Jason Dickinson both playing through fractures.
Knoblauch was asked during his exit availability if he was worried about his job.
“I’m always getting prepared on how to make the team better, whether it’s next week, next month, or next year,” he said. “I know the business this is and how times can change. But, yeah, that’s just the factor of being a head coach in the NHL is, it is what it is.”
Knoblauch was hired in November 2023 and helped turn around a bad start to the season and eventually help get Edmonton to the Stanley Cup Final. Then, another trip to the Stanley Cup Final in 2025.
He signed a three-year extension before the 2025-26 season began, but he’s in jeopardy of getting fired before it even kicks in. During the Olympic break, assistant coach Paul Coffey returned to run the blueline after stepping away following the June loss to the Florida Panthers. Knoblauch picked his staff, keeping Mark Stuart, and hiring Paul McFarland as an assistant.
According to Dave Pagnotta, the Oilers discussed a trade with the Toronto Maple Leafs involving Darnell Nurse. With a no-move clause, Nurse would have to sign off to any trade.
