The Edmonton Oilers’ arduous start to the season has seen them sputter to a 11-10-5 record through their first 26 games — a start that the writers at Daily Faceoff are none too impressed with.
In their weekly power rankings, done by Scott Maxwell and Hunter Crowther, the Oilers came in 22nd, climbing one spot from their 23rd spot they held last week.
Maxwell: Another week goes by, and it’s another week where the Oilers haven’t really made up any ground in the playoff race. Suddenly, their typical slow start in October has carried over into November, and there’s a lot more to be concerned about with this group. They didn’t exactly have a busy schedule this week (only two games) to start on that, but an 8-3 loss to Dallas being one of the two isn’t exactly an encouraging start. The worst part? The solution isn’t even as easy as finding a goalie… They lack scoring depth beyond the usual crew and Mattias Ekholm and Darnell Nurse have struggled, so Edmonton may need help on the back end, too. I still think Connor and Leon drag the team to the playoffs, but it’s getting far too close for comfort.
Crowther: Speaking of Roslovic, the Oilers will be without him for the next several weeks after he blocked a shot against the Stars. I don’t know how this group allowed itself to go into the season with almost nothing in their bottom six beyond a last-minute signing of said Roslovic.
Maxwell: Just like their goaltending plans, the Oilers’ bottom-six plans involved hope, only this time it was in Issac Howard and Matt Savoie.
Some other teams in the Pacific Division have gotten much more love than the Oilers, as the Vegas Golden Knights (fifth), Los Angeles Kings (sixth), Anaheim Ducks (seventh), and Seattle Kraken (19th), all rank ahead of them. The San Jose Sharks (29th), Vancouver Canucks (30th) and Calgary Flames (31st) all rank below.

Kings trade Thomas

The Los Angeles Kings traded 2018 second round pick Akil Thomas to the St. Louis Blues in exchange for forward Nikita Alexandrov on Tuesday.
Thomas, 25, has struggled to break into the Kings’ lineup in recent years, playing just 32 games with the team, scoring four goals and seven points. Most of his time has been spent with their AHL affiliate since turning pro in 2020-21, scoring 50 goals and 106 points across 176 games. He’s appeared in 19 AHL games this year, racking up nine goals and 13 points.
Alexandrov, also 25, was a second round pick of the Blues in 2019. He’s faced similar issues breaking into the NHL, having appeared in just 51 games, scoring three goals and nine points since arriving in North America in 2020-21. Similarly to Thomas, he’s spent more time in the AHL, scoring 61 goals and 143 points in 188 games over the last six years.

Brossoit’s assigned to AHL

Laurent Brossoit’s comeback has begun. The Chicago Blackhawks netminder has been activated from the injured, non-roster list and assigned to their AHL affiliate Rockford IceHogs for a conditioning stint. He hasn’t appeared in a game since the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs, then with the Winnipeg Jets, and underwent surgery to repair his meniscus that August. A subsequent arthoscopic surgery on his right knee came months later, ending his 2024-25 season before it began.
His name has popped up in trade rumours in recent weeks, with the Blackhawks already having Spencer Knight and Arvid Soderblom with their NHL club.
Brossoit, 32, was drafted by the Calgary Flames in the sixth round of the 2011 draft, but was traded to the Oilers in 2013, spending parts of four seasons with the team. He’s appeared in 140 NHL games over 10 years, posting a 64-46-13 record, a .911 save percentage and a 2.64 goals against average with the Oilers, Jets and Vegas Golden Knights.
