The Edmonton Oilers and their busy day of moves continued on Wednesday.
Defenceman Alec Regula has been loaned to the Bakersfield Condors of the AHL on a conditioning stint, according to the Edmonton Oilers.
Regula has played 29 games this season, pitching in three assists along the way. After playing often in the early part of the season, Regula has been in the Oilers’ lineup in just five of the last 17 games.
Playing on average 14 minutes and 28 seconds a night, Regula is a -16 in terms of plus-minus. In his last appearance on January 20 against the New Jersey Devils, the big-bodied rearguard played just three shifts and 2:35 of ice-time.
The news comes the same day as a coaching shuffle that will see former assistant coach Paul Coffey return behind the bench. Coffey will again run the defence corps to much fanfare.
Since the Oilers played their last game before the Olympic break on February 4, they’ve sent multiple players down to Bakersfield, including Josh Samanski and Calvin Pickard, right after the Flames game.
On Tuesday, Edmonton loaned Matt Savoie to the Condors for salary cap purposes, and he will play a minimum of one game while on loan.
Bakersfield hosts the Coachella Valley Firebirds on Wednesday night and then will face the Calgary Wranglers on Friday.
The 25-year-old blueliner in Regula is still green in the National Hockey League, more than doubling his total career games this season alone. He’d only played 22 NHL games with the Chicago Blackhawks between the 2020-21 season and the 2022-23 season.
Regula missed all of the 2024-25 season with a significant knee injury, claimed off waivers from the Boston Bruins on December 11, 2024.
