Report: Oilers were ready to trade Mangiapane for Maccelli, but Maple Leafs nixed it

The Edmonton Oilers’ search to trade Andrew Mangiapane has been nothing short of exhaustive.
The winger has been on the market since late December, but the Oilers seemingly have had much interest, despite the fact that reports have surfaced from far and wide about potential suitors.
One team that had interest in signing Mangiapane last summer when he was a free agent were the Toronto Maple Leafs, and the Oilers were ready to trade him east for Matias Maccelli, but the Leafs “weren’t too interested,” Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos reported this week.
One has to wonder what the deal would’ve looked like. Maccelli is on a one-year contract paying him $3.425 million this year, a mere $175,000 less than what Mangiapane makes. The money element, which is crucial for the Oilers if they want to make any more moves ahead of the trade deadline, doesn’t seem to line up with their plans.
Maccelli is a pending restricted free agent this summer, and he appeared on Daily Faceoff’s latest trade board as a player to “keep an eye on.”
“Once the Leafs bumped out assistant coach Marc Savard and handed the power-play reins to Steve Sullivan, Maccelli saw looks on the top unit and seemed rejuvenated,” Matt Larkin wrote. “The surge was short-lived, though, and he’s since been demoted to PP2. Back to expendable status?”
The 25-year-old Maccelli has appeared in 47 games this year for the Leafs, scoring 10 goals and 24 points, numbers that both surpassed his totals from the 2024-25 season with the Utah Mammoth, when he appeared in 55 games. His production has largely come at five-on-five, where he’s scored all of his goals and 18 of his points, putting up a .83 goals per hour rate and 1.86 points per hour rate.
Those marks would sit seventh and fourth on the Oilers, respectively, showing his ability to produce without special teams minutes. Despite getting outscored with him on the ice, the Leafs have driven play to the tune of a 53.4 percent expected goal share, according to Natural Stat Trick.
According to HockeyViz, his overall play this season has him contributing at the rate of a low-end first-line player, driving offence at a league average rate, and providing defence at a six per cent rate above league average.
While he doesn’t have much size at 5’11, 187 lbs., he’s the type of player who might be able to enter Edmonton’s bottom-six mix and help chip in more offence than Mangiapane has this season.
