Connor McDavid continues to hit milestones at a rapid pace.
After recording his 400th goal and 1,200th point on Tuesday, the Edmonton Oilers captain completed the trifecta with his 800th assist during Thursday’s matchup against the Vegas Golden Knights.
McDavid got the assist midway through the first period of Thursday’s game. While the Oilers had some sustained pressure in the Golden Knights’ zone, Evan Bouchard moved the puck across the blueline to McDavid. The superstar centre then skated along the boards toward the corner before finding an opening between through four Vegas players, setting up Matt Savoie in the slot. Savoie made no mistake with the shot, and beat Adin Hill over his right shoulder to open the scoring in the game and give Edmonton the 1-0 lead.
With the assist, McDavid gets the 800th of his career. By doing so in just 785 games, he becomes the third-fastest player to hit the milestone. It should come as no surprise which two players did it faster than McDavid, that being Mario Lemieux in 661 games and Wayne Gretzky in just 527. Gretzky’s first 800 assists all came with the Oilers, meaning McDavid is also only the second-fastest Oiler to hit the total.

McDavid also becomes the 36th player in NHL history to hit 800 assists, and the fifth active player to hit the milestone. The other active players on that list are Sidney Crosby, Patrick Kane, Evgeni Malkin and Anze Kopitar, so McDavid is not only the only active player under the age of 30 with the milestone, he’s the only player under the age of 37.
McDavid joins Gretzky as the only Oiler to hit 800 career assists. While Gretzky’s 1,963 career assists are a pipe dream for even McDavid to hit, Gretzky’s 1,086 assists as an Oiler is certainly a possibility, assuming McDavid stays with Edmonton long enough to do so. Based on his current scoring pace, McDavid should hit the total by his 1,066th game, which would come in the 2029-30 season.
McDavid hits the milestone amidst another excellent season with the Oilers, which has seen him put up 40 goals and 78 assists for 118 points in 72 games entering Thursday’s game. That has him second in the league in points behind Nikita Kucherov’s 121 points.
